Denki Blocks

The best puzzle games tend to be so simple that you are amazed no-one had thought of them before and you are maybe just a little annoyed that you did not think of it yourself. Denki Blocks gives you just one goal, push all the coloured blocks together, but from that basis they have built a wonderfully deep game.

By sliding your finger across the screen all the blocks move unless a wall or another block gets in it’s way. Using these obstructions you can force the blocks together. It’s not massively complex but it is very satisfying and it it all presented with a bright charm which shines on the iPhone and Touch screens. If that was all there was to the game it would still come highly recommended, but that is only half of the game…

Each one of the 100 levels can be completed by sticking all the blocks together but each level also has a Master challenge asking you to complete it with an extra restriction. Perhaps you need to complete it in just a handful of moves or within a certain time limit. Sometimes you will be tasked with combining the blocks in a particular shape as you finish. Most of them clearly show just how fiendish the minds at Denki are.

These challenges achieve the two things that a difficult puzzle needs. Firstly each one looks like it shouldn’t be too hard, which just encourages you to go give it another try before you put the iPod down and get on with your actual work. Secondly, each solution you find will be so convoluted that you feel dead smart to have found it! Combined, this makes sure Denki Blocks will get it’s hooks into you.

So on one side you have a simple and colourful puzzle game to distract you while you are on the bus or waiting for the adverts to finish, while the master challenges are deep enough to hold your interest and  keep you thinking long after most games would have been cleared out to make space for something newer.
